Today I purchased my first LG mobile, the 8575. I have been happy with the handset so far, but when I go to set mp3 ringtones for contacts, I get the error in the subject.

I have searched for a remedy to no avail. Can anyone provide suggestions or workarounds?

I am using the mp3 files from my microSD. They show as usable, but give the error when I choose 'set'.

Thank you all.

I'm having the same problem too.
The phone is deceptively cool since you can't personalize it the way you want.
When I try to add one add a ringtone through SMS, it removes the attachment from the file.

Ringtones from the online shop are rip-offs and they don't have music I want or even like.

I initially liked this phone, but I don't like that they can restrict what I put on it, especially since it's free and legal.

Do people reply on here? Obviously there just needs to be some made-up DRM file for the tones we put on there, but I have been out of mobile hacking for too long and don't have time to fool with it. I was hoping someone else or even LG could enlighten us.

Hokay, I won't pretend to know how, but after a couple of hours playing with Bitpim (God bless those devs), I have my custom tones on my 8575.

I used the Win version to load mp3s pretending it was an 11000, no dice. Then I went in and pretended it was a 3rd gen chokkit, and after deleting a few and adding a few it now will allow me to set my uploaded tones as ringers. I have not tested them all, but a majority work at this point and I am very happy with that.

Like I said, I don't know what voodoo was worked, but it does. Go give it a shot.

Nice topic, many Lg users have encountered that problem. If one will contribute and will share how to solve this problem many people will be happy.

You don't need bitpim to add a ringtone to your phone.

Getting the tones on the phone isn't the problem. The real problem is that the phone is "locked" in that it will only play DRM tones which you have to pay for and download from a site.

In order to use DRM you have to set up an account and pay for the DRM service (which is usually what professional musicians do).

So if you want to record a sound, say, your cat meowing, someone's voice or some other sound and set it as your ringtone- you can't.

It seems some people who got their phones from Verizon are able to add and play their custom ringtones, but it doesn't seem possible (so far) to do so with the Alltel version.

This is really disappointing and extremely frustrating since it clearly states in the user guide that you can add ringtones to your phone via sms (which also doesn't work- see DRM).

You are not getting what is advertised!
