Thanks for your patience!!! However, the news isn't very promising.... I have talked with the Product Specialists and, at this point, there isn't any word on whether there will be an update or not. My thoughts are that it definitely won't be soon.

If you like, I would let LG know about the concerns you have with the enV3 through other avenues as well as here... I'm still seeking assistance on my end, but coming from the Consumers would also be a good idea. I love this phone and would like to see this issue addressed.

Pride has nothing to do with it. Verizon has you locked in for 2 years and if you get tired of their rushed-to-market phones before your contract is up they stand to make a lot of money. After suffering through a Chocolate II for two years and getting yet another LG phone through Verizon with critical flaws they refuse to address I'm just about done with both companies.

This thread just blows my mind! I can't believe I stumbled in here.

Just last weekend I took my phone back to Verizon because, as I told the guy, "The damn phone keeps shutting itself off!" I figured there was something wrong with the firmware or the battery maybe. Sure, I keep the phone in my pocket, but I figured it couldn't have anything to do with keyguard because I have it activate after 7 seconds and I'm using the double OK approach. Anyway, Verizon was of no help whatsoever, so I gave up. The salesman told me I could come back in about six weeks and upgrade my phone on their "early upgrade plan".

After I talked to the salesman, I started looking at how the other phones handle key locking, and I quickly came to the conclusion that the ENV3 is uniquely lame! Even the ENV Touch uses a special button the side of the device and to unlock it requires a finger swipe which is impossible to duplicate when in a pocket. I checked the Moto Droid, and it has a similar set up. Heck, even my old Nokia used a * + Menu approach, and that thing never "butt dialed" or shut off in all the years I had it.

So, today I decide to cruise the Internet to see if there is anyway to change the key sequence, and lo and behold I stumble in here.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like LG is going to fix this, which really sucks. However, I'm going to print this whole thread out and take it to my Verizon store and make them do something! This is completely unreasonable. And no, I'm not going to buy a belt holder because I'm not a big fan of that look.

Even if you were cool with it on your belt, it wouldn't help, plenty of people still have problems using a holster.

Obviously, verizon's only solution was to make a quick buck of of you. Come, please, dump a couple hundred bucks on an early upgrade so you can be locked in for a couple more years of useless customer service and high monthly rates.

A band aid fix for inadvertent unlocking...I purchased the silicone case for the ENV3 when I bought the phone on line. As-shipped, it provides no improvement, but with minor modifications, it nearly solves the inadvertent unlocking issue. With the case remove from the phone carefully cut (use x-acto) around the raised circular silhouette marking the navigation buttons that surround the OK button. Once reinstalled, the silicone case still allows full use of all the buttons, but the navigation and OK button are now effectively recessed and HUGELY less prone to getting inadvertently pressed.

This is by no means a perfect solution, but makes it manageable. I'll say I found this case to be horrible as shipped since there are two straps that hold the two halves together that are positioned directly over the phone's hinge brackets, which then causes a gross interference when you open the phone. The interference causes the lower half of the case to misalign with the keyboard, making it hard to find the right buttons. To resolve this issue, I cut the straps off completely. For now, I'm seeing how I do with it this way, but worst case, I may just remove the lower half covering the internal keyboard away completely and just use the top half. Sorry, I don't have time right now to take photos right now, but I think the steps will be evident if you purchase the rubber keyboard cover from the Verizon store. Similar solutions might work for other cases as well, but the rubber is super-easy to trim with a sharp x-acto.

Thanks for your efforts on this. I've had an Env3 since October, and due to the inadequate keypad lock, the phone has been powering itself off often enough that I tell friends and family to call me on my company-provided Blackberry.

While we understand that you aren't to blame, please understand that your product specialist's response is unacceptable. Even if the Env3's firmware is for some reason completely unrelated to the Env2's, the change that we're asking for isn't exactly rocket science. The fact that this fix has existed for 4 years for the Env2 and doesn't yet exist for the Env3 is almost insulting to the consumer.

If your product specialists aren't willing or able to address this issue, then how can we get this issue into the hands of LG North America CEO Wayne Park and get some pressure applied from the top down? I don't think that many of us here have confidence in a "contact support" webpage to get quick results.

Yes, I'd let LG know how you feel... I haven't given up on this end and I continue to report the concerns and voice them to my management... I love the enV 3 and I'd love to see user issues addressed.

Stumbled in here just now and thought I'd add my voice to the issue. I carry my enV3 in my FL pocket and have experienced numerous times everything described in this forum. I've tried the "double-OK" unlock setting to no avail. Nearly every day I find that my phone has unlocked in my pocket and displays a random sequence of numbers on the screen. I've also been finding it powered down, more frequently lately than before.

I thought my phone was just going bad and I was getting ready to head to the Verizon store to talk with them.

I played with various key presses and for a while there, I found that pressing "Send-*-#" together was powering the phone down. Except after about 4 times, that stopped 'working'. However, I can get the phone to unlock every time with 'Send-7-*' or 'Send-8-0' or 'Send-9-#', as described earlier by another poster.

I've had this phone since August (about 6 months). I don't believe I should be forced to live with this problem for another 18 months before I can get a new phone, and I certainly don't think I should have to PAY MORE MONEY for a phone that works before that.

Has anyone had any luck getting Verizon to replace/upgrade/switch phones WITHOUT paying more money or extending their committment?

ps: This is my first LG phone (I've been a Motorola user for 10+ years). I like it, for the most part, but I'm really not sure my next phone will be another LG.

I've tried holsters, but they have a tendency to stab me in the gut when I bend or sit down, or to come unclipped and go flying. So yes, I keep my phone in my pocket, and when I take it out, I find all manner of random keys pressed on my keyboard, or find the phone turned off altogether!

My first impulse was like many of yours: That there was something wrong with my phone. Nope, all it takes is two presses on the "ok" button, and a two-second press on the "end" button. I do it constantly.

Accidentally pressing twice on "ok" is easy on the env3. The button is big, and sits right in the middle of the phone. Don't believe me? Turn your phone upside down on a table and push down on it twice. Now pick it up and look at the screen. Phone unlocked.

Seriously, LG, do you QA your products AT ALL?

I tried changing the lock settings to make them more complex. No such option. I can choose to press OK once, or twice. That's it! There are 100 better options than this. Has LG gotten lazy on us?

Now, there is a slightly better option. But don't get excited: It won't solve our problems completely, and it adds unwanted complexity:

1. Open the flip
2. Press OK, 9,6, 7, and enter your phone's security code (you will have to set the code first if you have not already done so).
3. Press 4.

The phone will now be in "locked" mode (different than keylock mode) and the user's security code must be entered to unlock the phone, make a call, or read a text message. Because you must enter the code before making a call, this will put an end to MOST pocket dialing.

Caveats:

1. Even in "locked" mode, you can press "ok" twice and hit a bunch of random keys, and they will still annoyingly show on your screen when you take it out of your pocket. It's cumbersome to clear this when you want to make a call. ("ok-ok-end-ok-security code"). That's about 8 key touches before you can make a call--definitely not easy to do when driving, for example.
2. When in locked mode, you can still dial emergency or "special number" calls. This means you can still inadvertently call 911 (as another poster did recently). I don't know what a "special number" is: I tried 311, 411, #BAL, and a bunch of my speed dials while in locked mode, and I could not call any of them.
3. You don't need to unlock the phone to answer a call. This means that, if someone calls you while the phone is in your pocket, and you happen to pocket-dial "ok-ok-send" (not as hard to do as it sounds), the person on the other end is going to be talking to your boxer shorts.
4. If you have taken the phone out of locked mode, and wish to lock it again, you must open the flip and follow the three steps listed above. This is tedious!
5. And worst of all: You can still shut the power off when the phone is locked ("ok-ok-end"). So we'll still be dealing with unwanted power-downs.

Long story short: The lock mode will help with pocket dialing and not much else.

Followup: I learned from another site that the power-down problem is not due to buttons being pressed, but because the battery (which also doubles as the phone's back) fit's just a tad loosely. I discovered that simply applying pressure the the bottom corner of the battery caused to phone to shut down.

Solution: placing a bit of paper inside the battery compartment makes the back fit nice and snug. I first tried folding a sheet of paper a couple of times, but found that it was too thick and caused the back to bulge slightly. So I cut all the folds, so that I just had flat layers of paper (5 to be exact) and that fits great. I also cut a notch around the battery contacts, so I never have to worry about the paper interfering. I have not had a power-down happen since.

I too have found the shut-off problem is related to the battery. And obvious clue was that I never heard it played the shutdown melody - just found it OFF. Applying a spacer as mentioned above maybe a safer method but I went another way. I removed the battery and very carefully bent the four small battery connector strips. They stick up and contact the battery but it seems under pressure the phone body will flex enough to make them loose connection which shuts the phone off. By bending them up just a little my problem was solved. Been over a week carrying it in my pocket with NO shut offs - ZERO. Before wouldn't make it a 30 minutes.

But be careful if you decided to do this. The connectors are fragile and you don't want to break them.

Yes, I am one more that registered to voice my displeasure about this problem. I have always owned Motorolas, but decided to try the ENV3 since my wife liked her ENV2.

It is apparent that LG is NOT interested in fixing this, inspite of it appearing to be a widespread problem and a relative easy fix.(both the loose battery, and the keypad lock). The message they are sending to us is, "Take a hike, we already have your money."

If I have to endure one more butt chewing from the wife because she can't reach me because my phone has turned off, I will be passing the chewing along to Verizon along with getting a new non-LG phone. Maybe Verizon can get LG's attention since I am sure there are plenty of these phones coming back with these symptoms.
