I purchased the DARE and for the most part I am happy with the phone. However, the speaker sounds garbled and tinny when using the speakerphone during a conversation, or when trying to listen to VZ Navigator. The distortion is almost as if the volume was too loud, but regardless of level, the sound stinks. Is this a software fix or is it a hardware problem? The display phone at the verizon store had the same issue. |

LOL I just found your post and mine is EXACTLY the same title for the same reason! I couldn't agree more! Great little phone, if your a barbie doll with no real ears! What is up with the speaker?! Sound totally sucks on this phone. 1000% agreement here |

I have a Dare and unfortunately have not experienced the problems you are with the speaker phone. I just re-tested now to be sure. I just tried playing music, listening to the VZ Navigator and had someone call me and I put them on speaker - on various volumes. I wonder if you have a ca ca speaker? ---- |

Does anyone know why they put the speaker on the back of the phone? |

Perhaps it isn't much but if you take a close look at your Dare you will see that it has little "feet" that raise the phone up so it is not lying flat - thus blocking the speaker. I'm certain it isn't as loud as let's say putting the speaker right up to your ear but as one user posted earlier (rachelb24) they are not experiencing any speaker issues. |

I haven't had any problems with the speaker. In fact - I use it all the time to talk on the phone. I rest the phone on the "little feet" and chat away. I'm often turning down the volume because it's so loud. I would suspect that if people are experiencing problems with their speaker it may be an isolated incident. I'd recommend exchanging it at a local Verizon store.
As for the speaker placement - my guess is that it was put on the back so that they could have a large enough one to make it worth even having. Previous phones that I have had had such a small speaker that it's worthless. Having the speaker on the back allows for the larger touch screen. |
