Can someone give me some basic information about the memory in a smart phone (particularly the Incite C810)? Im trying to run a GPS program, CoPilot. It has three parts: the main executable program, a large amount of map data stored on a 4-GB SD card, and an add-on text-to-speech (t-to-s) converter.

The basic program runs fine, but when I try to activate the text-to-speech module, it says there is not enough free memory to run. The CoPilot people tell me the t-to-s module needs about 25 MB of RAM.

The specs for the Incite say that it has 256 MB of ROM, 128 MB of RAM, and 70 MB of Storage Memory. However, when I go to Settings/System/Memory/Main it says there are only 78 MB (total) of Program Memory, and that there are 95 MB of Storage Memory.

Is Program Memory the same thing as RAM? If so, why does it show only 78 MB rather than 128 MB?

When I close all programs running on the device, Settings says that of the 78 MB of Program Memory, 49 MB are in use and 27 MB free. If I run CoPilot (without the t-to-s, of course), the amount of Program Memory in use goes up by 19 MB, leaving only 8 MB free, clearly not enough to run the t-to-s module as well.

But if the Incite is supposed to have 128 MB of RAM, not 78 MB, there should be more than enough free memory. What happened to the missing 50 MB of RAM?

So far Ive mentioned four types of memory (excluding the SD card): ROM, RAM (=Program?), Program, and Storage. There appears to be yet a fifth type: when I run Task Manager it says CoPilot is using 516 kB (not MB) of memory. What memory is that?

And of course the bottom line to all these questions is, how can I get more free memory so I can run the t-to-s module?

I think the missing 50MB of RAM is being used by Win 6.1 as over head, there really isn't a lot of room to play with. In later versions of Win Mobile more of the OS was built into ROM requiring less RAM to for operating room... There are some good threads over on XDA-Developers.com discussing memory issues in 6.1...

Some users have resorted to building and or installing Custom ROMS with less bloatware allowing more working room. Of course this could be a Warranty issue if it causes problems, but it might be an option to consider.

Thanks, LG Product Pro. I went over to XDA-Developers but found it somewhat out of my depth. Your suggestion about a bloatware-stripped ROM sounds good, but I didn't find anything I was certain about. Can you point me towards something?

I've never gotten into the Custom ROM world, I'm not in a position to do it with my phones, and I haven't had a dialog with any of the people who are developing the ROMs... There is an interesting NON LG Site called "LG-Incite.com" that talk about Incite Stuff... It is not supported by LG and any modifications will void your warranty... But, here is a Thread on Incite ROMS.

Yes, that website was very helpful. Haven't taken the plunge yet, as I'm going on a trip & will *need* the phone, but I think I'll try on my return. Thanks again.
