I handle mainly the Phone released in the US through US Carriers, so I haven't seen the LG GT540... However it looks like it's an Android 1.6 phone so you should be able go to Settings, then Language & Keyboard> Next choose Local and you should see English as one of your options.

Humm good question... I don't have the GT540 to play with and I can't seem to find a Manual. It looks like there are multiple versions of the software depending on region and the Carrier it was intended for. Does your GT540 have 5 buttons at the Bottom of the Screen? A Home Key, Back, Dial, End Call, and one in the Middle that loks lke a Square of some sort? This button seems to take you to the Settings menu where it looks like the second option in the menu is "Local & Text"... I think this where you would change the Language...
OR The other version I found is listed below.
*After you unlock the phone, there should be a menu Icon in the Task bar at the bottom right of the Screen... It's a Circle with a Downward pointing arrow...
* Open the Menu and look for another Icon that looks like a Gear.
* Press on the Gear Icon and you should see something like "Local" or Keyboard or Local & Keyboard. This is where you would change your region and language...

Sorry for the confusion! Let me know what you find!
