I Currently are having issues with the LG Ally freezing up whenever I send a text or receive one.

it will also randomly freeze and restart randomly but the text is a sure thing it will.

sometimes it hangs up and instantly restarts it self and other takes to long so i have to pull the battery.

Ive tried the hard reset
with no apps installed it does this.

I was suggested to use Advanced task killer app.
did nothing the phone still freezes.

This is the 5th LG ALLY phone to do this for me
yet again I go to get a replacement one.

Ive read on a number other pages people having this issue. seems like if this is a problem there would be some kind of update.
but my phone is up to date with firmware.

I regret buying this LG phone. nothing but issues.
with it.

I'm sorry to see the issues you are experiencing with the Ally. Over all we have had good success with the Ally... However there have been a couple of reports of some issues we are looking but nothing of this severity...

If you would like to contact me off forum that's cool as well... Webmaster@lgforum.com

For you to have had 5 bad Ally's in a row is disturbing and I'm trying to figure out why you are seeing the problems you state.

* Can you tell me what City/State you are currently using the Ally in?

* Do you know how much free memory the Ally is reporting to have available when they start acting up?

* Are you able to send any text messages or doe it happen on all messages sent and received?

* Are you, by chance, an old Alltel customer who was converted to Verizon? when the merged?

Please let me know if there is anything else you can think of that might help...

I will look into things on this end this evening.

I have had trouble with an Ally I picked up about three weeks ago. What I found was that it would lock up when trying to read emails, or texts when the radio signal was very low. After it would re-boot, it would work for a few messages, then lock and re-boot again. Verizon had me pull the battery and res-start it. I don't know if the problem is cured as I haven't gone back to the marginal coverage area. It was also an area where I was roaming on USCellular.

I also have the issue of the sporadic freezing up, even when I try to power down. I have to take out the battery to restart the whole thing. I am WILLING to live with that if I could only check my voicemails!!! EVERY TIME I get a voicemail, I press the DIAL PAD button to enter my passcode and it BLACKS OUT!!! Every time my finger gets close to the dial pad, it goes blank and does not register me pressing on the screen. It does this each and every time I check my voicemails. I got my replacement phone tonight and guess what?? It is doing the exact same thing. I find no setting for sensitivity for the dial pad or phone in general. What are the odds that both phones are doing this to me? I would love to keep the phone but am extremely frustrated with it. I have had the Envy and the Voyager and have loved both. I am ready to switch to a non-LG phone if this issue doesn't get fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

Humm it almost sounds like you finger is passing close to the "Proximity" sensor which is supposed to "Blank" the screen when it detects that the phone is close to your Face to conserve power. I have had mine do this to me as well. If you look at the top right of your display you will seea Small dot (Sensor) just to the Right of the Verizon logo and if you pass your hand over it you display will go black... It was kind of frustrating for me since they are normally on the left side, I wasn't prepared for it. But when I realized what it was, I just approach the screen froma little different angle and it works...

If you dial something like Voicemail or *228 where you get a Voice menu you can play with the Sensor to see if it is indeed the cause of your issue.

If anyone is an old "Alltel" customer that has ported their number over to Verizon, this could be an issue and is something that is being addressed in the new Update that is in Testing....

If any of our Ally users don't mind, could you let me know so I can see who might be experiencing this.

Thanks.

I just recently found out this phone was used to push Iron Man 2 didn't even think about it. But ever play a video game based on a movie?
not a very good video game.
hopefully this isn't the case
The support to help resolve the issues is amazing on both ends LG and Verizon. However 5 phones later its gets a little annoying for everyone involved.

Not saying every phone is like this but every phone Ive been sent has been bad. Ive joined every forum imaginable related to this phone. This is the best one so far and i have seen good and negative feedback for it on all forums.

the one thing that links all of it together is the freezing problem allot of post about it.
LG Pro is doing an awesome job and going out of there way to help and keep everyone updated
on all aspects of any issue on the phone.
thanks

LG Pro sent you another email with the info you asked for.
thanks

I haven't had this exact problem, but my new Ally doesn't always respond to touching the touch screen. Sometimes I have to try several times before it will power off completely, and at other times I have to touch the screen repeatedly to get the "key" to respond.

At this point it's an annoyance, rather than a full-blown problem.

Yes that can be frustrating, but even an "Annoyance" can sour your perception of the device.

Assuming you are experienced I'm sure you're aware of the effect of multitasking and low memory conditions causing the phone to pause, hesitate and not respond to Button presses or finger swipes in a timely manner.

If you are new to Android and or the Ally then I would just mention a couple of things to look for that might effect performance.

If you have tried these suggestions and they haven't helped then possibly you have a bad screen on your Ally and need to contact Verizon Support or LG Support.

But first try these steps...

* Restart BUT before launching any Applications, see if the phone is more responsive.

* Under Settings>> "SD Card & Phone Storage" at the bottom check to see how much FREE internal Memory you have available... If you get below 20MB Available, you'll probably start having issues.

* Uninstall some larger applications to free up memory.

* With the phone powered ON... Pull the battery and leave it out for a minute before replacing and rebooting. Before launching any Applications, see if the phone is more responsive.

* Before calling Customer Service, you might consider doing a Hard Reset on the phone. Make sure you back it up first or have your Data Synced with Google, Calendar, Email, and Contacts... Hard Resetting the phone WILL restore the phone back to the way it was from the factory so you will have to Setup everything again and reinstall your Downloaded applications.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and please be careful if you do decide to do a Hard Reset... It's not too fun restoring everything that you have set up. :-)

I have had the same problems with my Ally. I absolutely love the device when it is working, but it has been frustrating at times.

I suffer from frequent freeze-ups, some of which shut the phone down themselves...others that don't so I finally remove the case, the back and the battery myself. There doesn't seem to be any trigger...I can be texting, browsing, or it can just be sitting on the table and it will do it.

It does seem to be improving somewhat, though. The first weekend I had it, it froze between 30 and 40 times that day. It's less now, but still enough of an annoyance that there have been times I've wanted to drive over my phone and listen to the crunching sound it would make.

I had been running ATK, but after reading a bit on this forum I've removed it and will see if that does anything for me in the next couple of days. The battery does seem to run out pretty fast, though, so if ATK was helping with this I may just be inviting another problem. My battery often does not last half the day...without me talking on it or playing with it.

I've had the problem with the voice mail thing, too...only remedy I have found to make the screen not go black is to use the speaker to check my messages and lock the keyboard to ON. Then I can get my messages...and if I want...once I've entered my PIN I can turn the speaker off.

The most frustrating thing for me has been that I have passed my 30 days with Verizon where I can get out of the LG Ally (which I really sincerely don't want to do) and move to a different DROID. Fortunately, Verizon has worked with me on this and I have a remark on my account that they will waive the $35 restocking fee if I return my Ally for something else...and also they will extend the time I can trade for a different model until the store has other models in stock (specifically the Droid X that is out of stock because it's brand new).

That said, I'm still not certain I want a different phone -- I really like the LG Ally but for the fact that about the time I need to make a call or send a text -- the phone is frozen and I can't without removing the battery and hoping that when I reinstall the battery it stays on. I've wasted a lot of time and productivity with this handset. The biggest annoyance for me is that I feel that I am at the mercy of the phone, the phone manufacturers, Verizon...and that somehow the Universe is conspiring against me.

Pro...I received an update tonight...will that address any of this? Would you like more information from me and if so...what? Are there other things I can do or try?

Thanks for listening -- like I said -- I want to keep this phone, but if there isn't a remedy I'm going to have to switch handsets. Since Verizon won't agree to only charge me for half the monthly service even though I'm only able to use my phone half the time...I'd have to move on to something else.

BTW, Verizon has told me that this is an issue related to our geographic area...and that our area of the USA is the ONLY area where this is happening. At first it sounded like they were telling me that our towers needed to be updated in some way, and then the story changed to LG needing to come out with a software upgrade. The stories were giving me whiplash...can you shed any light on this?

Thanks again...

I am a former Alltel customer and am experiencing the same problem. I got my new LG Ally on 24 July and it started freezing the next day. I returned the phone for another, same model, on 28 July and it has since frozen several times.

Since removing ATK my phone performance has improved tremendously. My battery lasts way longer and freeze ups are not very frequent anymore, and therefore less frustrating.

The one issue that DOES bug me, though, is that on the dialpad when you are placing a call there is the ABC on 2, DEF on 3, etc....but if you are on a call and need to punch in something letter-based (like when you have associated a password with a WORD or when you want to search a directory for the right extension) only the numbers are visible. This is a BIG BUMMER because it is a feature I use alot and it's hard to remember what number corresponds to what letter!!!

Can LG do an update to fix this?

Thanks
Sue

I am rapidly losing my patience with this phone. At times it will work great, then when you really need to use it it takes almost a minute to unlock the phone and make a phone call! Sometimes I just want to throw it out the window and go buy a new phone. When I first got the phone it was mostly random reboots which were the problem, annoying but you can live with them. The phone was a little sluggish, but never so slow that you wondered if it didn't recognize that you touched it. I improved this by removing ATK, Antivirus and running LauncherPro. With all this I was able to keep my free memory in the 50-70 MB range. I've never been able to run live wallpapers (frankly they shouldn't even be an option on this phone). From day one I've never been able to go more than 8 hours without charging, less if I actually use it as a smart phone (web, misc apps). This being my first smart phone I chalked that up to it being a smart phone. I was upset that I was mislead that I could sync my Exchange calendar on the phone, but was assured that it would be fixed soon and didn't have to return the phone. The big motivating factor for me getting this phone was that I could combine my work and personal events and action items into one place/tool.

After OTA V8 thing seemed better at first and I finally got my Exchange calendar! But this was short lived. Even with no ATK, Antivirus and LauncherPro the phone just grinds to a halt. I've tried shutting off my Ex. Calendar and contacts sync, facebook sync (which helps for a short bit) and removing the weatherbug widget from the desktop. So basically I can't run any widgets or anything that sync when I first bring the phone out of standby. I'm now consistently in the 20-30 MB free range, and once it dips below 20 the phone is worthless. It'll get so bad I can't even shut it off, I have to remove the battery and let it sit. Lets only hope I don't get into an accident or need to dial 911 during these times! I've also seen no improvements in battery life. I have the 50% bug, which before I found a workaround I averaged 50-80% of the time with no signal, and I live in a major city! I am able to do the *#*#4636#*#* trick, this works for a couple of days then I have to switch it back to GSM for about an hour then put the work around back in. It is said that this is a 2.1 dialer bug, but I find it hard to understand that you can have like hardware and like ROMs on two different phones and one will have the bug and one won't, yet there is no simple patch that can be pushed to fix it.

I bought my wife the Ally the same time I got mine and she has hardly any issues at all, and no 50% bug. Granted she does not use the Exchange syncs. She keeps riding me to take the phone in and have it replaced or looked at, and I know all they are going to do it flash it. That is hard for me to swallow since it takes so long to set one of these things up and also since I know this phone is a Linux based OS. Coming from the Unix world myself I find it hard to accept flashing and rebooting as viable solutions. I've tried very hard to narrow down what the problem applications or configurations are, but there seems to be no real solution other than not to run anything resident and don't have too many things sync.

So now I have to decide whether its worth my time to try to root the phone to install Titanium and back it up, or if it will be faster just to reinstall everything after the flash it? (This irks me too by the way, I have a computer and no way of backing it up without rooting the phone.) Then how many times do they flash it before they give me a new phone, then will I get a good one or will it be just another buggy phone? I'm have tempted to just chunk down $400 and get another device and throw this one away, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. If I wasn't such a tight wad I probably would have by now. But then again if I wasn't I probably would have just gotten the Incredible and not been in the this mess to begin with.

For those of you whose phones work great, good, I'm glad! But there seems to be a real quality control issue somewhere. It seems to me that this product was rushed to market way to fast, way to cheap and with no mind to the future. And because of this it looks as if LG will have to abandon the Ally in place and move on to its next device.

LG Pro, thanks for all your hard work and upbeat attitude on these forums, but unfortunately it doesn't appear that any of your co-workers are actually helping fix any of the problems or answer any of the questions raised in these forums. Instead we are told we might get an update to fix "some" issues.

My advice to anyone looking at the Ally, If you get it free it might be worth a shot, but return it before your 30 days if you see any signs that there might be issues. And don't buy any accessories until after the 30 days and you know you are going to keep the phone. All others, its probably safer just to move on to something else.

P.S. I'm really pissed at the chick that did the CNet video review of this phone right now.
