Just got an LG ally

Live in San Diego, but cross a lot into Mexico.
Does anybody know if the shutoff for DATA Roaming is working or has a glitch?

To get to it you go:

settings-->wireless & networks-->Mobile Networks-->uncheck Data Roaming.

I've done this but the phone continues to transmit while roaming in Tijuana.

I have Nationwide plus Mexico plan. Between the wife and myself we already got over $100 worth of data roaming charges. Had to call verizon and explain the situation. They will credit me the charges and they had to shut off the data transmit from the back end of the network. meaning from the switches that recognize the phones in the network. The problem is this is only temporary until
my billing cycle ends. Afterwards it will reset and will most likely start roaming with data again.

Like I said a, master reset was just done but once I cross into mexico no message
was sent saying data roaming is disabled.

Thanks

I'm making inquiries to our "Solutions" people to see if they have encountered this.

* Under settings-->wireless & networks-->Mobile Networks--> Try Turning on "ERI" Enhanced Roaming Indicator to see if it will display a Banner showing your Status.

* Also under the same location, but under "System Select" have you tried setting it to "Home Only?" ... I'm not sure if that will limit Voice as well as Data, or just Data....

Let em see if I can find an answer.

Thanks LG Pro,

I actually tried the ERI but all it does is give an audible signal on wether I'm in Verizon's network or not. I considered "Home Only" setting but like you mentioned, I might loose
voice as well. Before the back end block on DATA, while roaming in Mexico I would see the 3G bars transmitting meaning the Phone was generating data roaming charges.

A relative of mine works for a verizon reseller, he has a Devour and as soon as he crosses into Mexico he will get a notice that DATA is no longer active.

Figured I'd throw this out there, as this might not be a very visible issue since not many people have the Ally and travel abroad generating DATA roaming.

To tell you the truth the wife and myself really like the phone, but if we cannot figure the issue out then we will probably have to exchange them for something else.

We really like LG phones ,have always had them from Verizon for the past six years.

Hopefully your "Solutions" people can shed some light on this.

Have you tried switching the Network settings to "1X" only? I would do this in a place and time that you can recover if it kills Voice as well.

Data shut-off is included in the Android 2.2 update. So, if we get the 2.2 update for the Ally then you can just change that setting and you're fine.

Data shutoff would be a lot cleaner.... I'm hoping that switching to '1X' will do the trick since we are unsure about the 2.2 update.

LG Pro,

I'll try the 1x thing as soon as the billing cycle ends which will reset the transmission, which is in the next day or so. Have your solutions people commented on this? Just curious as to why the phone would continue to transmit DATA with the data roaming unchecked.

Thanks

No we're still looking at it... The Solutions team recommended the same thing in the mean time. This might be an issue with Android 2.1 since it looks like there will be a switch in Android 2.2 that will Disable Data Access over the Mobile network. ... I'm hoping we can find a way to fix it in an update we have planned for Android 2.1

I'll let you know what I find out.
