Welcome to the Forum!! This is definitely the place for User questions, especially new users so don't be afraid of posting. We have a lot of experienced people here who can jump in to assist you!!! Remember, we were ALL new at some point :-) There are two different types of "Updates" that are being discussed here on the Forum. The Big one is concerning a NEW version of the Operating System which is a massive change effecting all aspects and operations of the Phone Look, Feel, and Operation... This upgrade to Android 2.2 has been in the works for some time... Unfortunately the new Upgrade requires more resources than it looks like the Ally can support... We don't know for sure, but it looks like the Android 2.2 might not work on the Ally. As much as I would love to see the upgrade, I'm very happy with the current version and find it very useful... When we get the 'Kinks' worked out of it will be very solid. However the Forum is really pushing for the Android 2.2 Upgrade which should be pretty sweet. The Second Update we are talking about is to the Firmware of the phone which is Ver 8. It sounds like you are up to date with the Firmware. Firmware updates are more frequent than the Oerating System updates and can happen at anytime, where as the the Operating System updates are generally rare and are more Massive in nature. The Operating System (Android 2.1) and the Firmware (Ver 8) work hand in hand to provide the basis for all of the phones functions and interface. Ver 8 of the Firmware was intended to 'patch' some of the issues in the old version of the Firmware and add additional functionality. As you'll notice on the Forum it has helped but there are some issues, still. I expect a newer version of the Firmware in the near future and as I mentioned above will be updated as needed. Both of these types of Updates/Upgrades are delivered 'Over The Air' (OTA) meaning that the updates are 'pushed' from central servers to all of the individual phones when they are ready to be released. So, at some point, you will get a Notification on your Ally telling you that an update is available and all you have to do is accept the update and it will download and install it's self on your phone. There is a mechanism where you can check for updates but I haven't seen it do much. It should tell you that there is something available for your phone. Most updates are initiated on the server end meaning that users don't have to manually check all the time, the Servers do all of the work. I'm sure someone can jump in and add more detail or clarify my answers. :-) Feel free to jump in anytime with Questions and or Answers.... I think you'll find the Android operating System and the Ally addictive, very functional, and above all else fun. |

Interesting... There never was a Ver 2 of Firmware released to the field. Can you send me a pict of that screen? I'll have to investigate, I've never seen a Ver 2 webmaster@lgforum.com |

Ok now I know why my phone will not up date. Had lunch with my verizon rep today and the Phone i have is a DEMO phone ( did not know there was a difference). But anyways, after another 30 days our company is signing a contract with verizon and we will be getting the "non demo" phone that he said sould have all the updates. And nothing was said about android 2.2 either. So i will have to wait another 30 days until i get my new Ally and then i will see about the updates. |

A Pre-production unit. That makes sense... You should get the latest and greatest when your Verizon Rep gets them to you... If not they will be capable of the OTA updates. |
