I recently dl some ringtones on my pc but when i save them to sd card and put them on phone they just go fubar....

You cannot use the SD card to load ringtones onto your phone. You must either download them through the media center/GIN/Dashboard/Whatever, or use 3rd party software such as Bitpim, which you can read more about: here...

Or the most simple technique is to email them to @vzwpix.com and when they arrive you can choose to "save as ringtone".
