Maybe a stupid question but how do I know what software I am currently running?

This is actually an Excellent question, most people don't know where to find there phone info.

GoTo Settings>> About Phone>> Next scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and you should see the Software Version "SW Version" under the heading it will say "VS740ZV6" Meaning the Ally is model # VS740 and you are running ver 6 or 8.... The list digit is the version.

Odd, on Vista 64 the update program just will not see my phone. I have no clue as to why. So unless there's a way to get V9 and do a manual install, I'm out of luck.

Thanks LG Product Pro. Your posts have been very helpful.

I was able to update to V9 and yes, I can see how regular users would not be able to download it, I agree it should only be available OTA so that everyone is on the same page.

The phone seems to work fine or better with V9 accept for the issue of some apps like Skype no longer available for download

My 3 questions at this point are:

1) Is V9 a real realease or some beta version of sorts that will not be supported?

2) Am I ok to stay with V9 and will updates past V9 work ok on my phone?

2) Is there a reason why would some apps not able available, like Skype and others, and what needs to be done so that I can get those downloads. I contacted one of the App vendors that I can no longer download and they told me its because they don't yet support 2.2, so is there some sort of a signature in V9 (i.e. firmware 2.1 update1?) that is not letting me download some apps?

Thanks again for all the great posts!

Finger pointing not directed to you, I was referring to my attempts to get simple answers about Froyo from LG Corporate or Google Android support.

I have not gotten v8 or 9 updates. Why is this? What can I do?

The Updates are rolled out through Verizon and I'm not sure what there schedule is for each region. Did you by chance get prompted to update and then accidentally Dismiss it? If you haven't been prompted to update yet, it should happen at anytime...

What I would do would be to contact Verizon support to see if they can tell you whether your Region has been updated yet.... There isn't a way to "Initiate" the update from your end.

Let me know what you find out.

1: Since 'V9' is out in the field, I feel confident that the next version will be higher number like 10, 11 or so on.

2: I feel that v9 is just like ver 8 but with a different Revision #... I haven't seen any difference, so ver 9 should work just like v8... If not, they would have given us a heads up. Yes it won't cause any issues as far as warranty or support goes... Support is aware that there are a few phones out there with Ver 9 (Like Mine)

3: Skype? Yeah it was there and now?? The Skype page for Ally is even missing. I'm wondering if it was a contractual issue. Maybe that's why it isn't there any more. I can't find it in Verizon's media store any longer, even looking for other Android Devices. I'll check into this as well.

Thanks for the Posts!

Thanks for the re-assurance about V9. I will stick with it. I spoke to Verizon, they told me that V9 update has VOIDED my warrenty... which is pretty sad.

I am doing well with V9 - no new issues and battery is doing well (even with that 50% bug I keep reading about).

I was hoping this version would fix the bluetooth single push dialing issue (but it didn't) - anybody out there know if that fix is possible if this little fella doesn't go to 2.2.

Thanks

In theory they can backport any of the feature fron 2.2 but by the time they get all the critical fixes and user requested updates they might as well have written a completely custom 2.2 ROM.

Got V8 update finally yesterday. Should I receive a V9 update too or is v8 it for now? Thanks for your help.

Can you tell me who at Verizon said this?? Was it someone in Customer Service or at a Local Store? I want to chase this down.

Checking internally and I also called Verizon support... You Warranty is NOT Void. It was, after all, an LG Update. If there are any issues, let me know.

Thanks LG Product Pro.

I called Verizon customer service and they contacted one of the stores, and based on the "manager" I am guessing at the store, they said that LG Update is "3rd" party update that voids the warranty, but I can go to my local store and it will be the store that will make the decision (at least this is what I was told).

I am going to stick with V9 since I don't see any problems besides some apps no longer working.

Thanks again!

That's actually Frustrating... Whether Ver 9 was meant for the field or not you got it From LG! That's all they need to worry about. It isn't a "3rd Party" update it's an official LG update.

Let me know if this becomes an issue.

Well I'm still having issues with my Ally running the v9. I went to the Verizon store got the girl to extend my 30 day warranty out another 2 weeks. If by Wednesday the market is still blocking Skype and Paypal among others I am gonna take it back and get a new one. And whether or not it works better or worse I will keep it at least till the new Windows Phone comes out.

Good idea... I'm trying to get an answer. To see if we can get it done before your Due Date.
