Hi guys. I know that the Rumor is capable of displaying animated wallpapers since it comes with several preloaded.

One would assume that these were simply animated .gif files, but when I tried to transfer some animated .gifs using a data cable and the micro SD card, the phone didn't even read the .gifs. It was as if they weren't even there.

Does anyone know what format these animated wallpapaers might be?

I don't own a rumor, but based on what LG has done with all their recent phone, I would imagine they are in .swf (flash) format. That being the case, usually you have to overwrite the stock ones in the filesystem via Bitpim. I'm also not familliar w/ Sprint's firmware, but if you open the filesystem tab in Bitpim, try to look for folders containing .swf files. If you can find one of the stock ones, just overwrite it with your own. I have matrix code scrolling on my Venus.
